Will Twitter’s new “Vine” Become Part of the Local Marketing Mix?

Tuesday, January 29, 2013

Twitter introduces Vine

Mashable: “Will the :06 become the new :30 in the ad world?”

Late last week, Twitter launched a new mobile video service called Vine. The service allows users to make short looping videos on their mobile devices and share via Twitter and Facebook. The videos have length constraints of 6 seconds – similar to Twitter’s 142 character limit – which Vine hopes will “inspire creativity.”

Many people are already asking how businesses can take advantage of Vine to boost their video marketing efforts. Thus far, Vine has not provided guidelines on business usage or offered business-specific account settings. That said, many big brands have already started testing out the platform, including Gap, Moose Tracks, and NBC News. I’m sure it won’t be long before we start to see initial case studies on how brands are leveraging the tool in their outreach.

Integrating video into local advertising strategy is certainly the right way to go. In December 2012 alone, comScore found that 84.9 percent of online Americans viewed online video. With advances in smartphone technology, mobile video viewership is becoming much more prevalent as well.

It’s important that local businesses testing out Vine in their marketing outreach keep core principles in mind, such as making sure their videos aren’t focused exclusively on sales, and provide incentives for followers to share the videos with others and come back for more.

Vine is currently available on the iOS platform. You can download it via the iTunes store.

60th Annual Keep America Beautiful Conference

Tuesday, January 29, 2013

Gene Wilk of LSA at the train station.

I’m traveling from New Jersey by train today to attend the 60th annual Keep America Beautiful conference in Washington, DC.  Joining me are Yellowbook’s Matt Krug and YP’s Felicia Smith, flying from Iowa and Georgia respectively.

For these next three days, the Omni Shoreham Hotel in DC’s Woodley Park neighborhood will be home to hundreds of local leaders from throughout the United States and Canada.  These community advocates work hard all year long to promote recycling, sustainability and anti-littering.  I’m sure they’re going to be pleased to learn more about our industry’s good efforts with consumer choice and sustainability.

Keep America Beautiful has been an important partner to the Local Search Association, most notably, having its logo featured in the lower-right corner of YellowPagesOptOut.com.  This past November, KAB featured an LSA “toolkit” for America Recycles Day that helped event organizers show people how they can select the directories they want delivered by using YellowPagesOptOut.com.

This conference is the first of many stops on LSA’s 2013 conference collaborative where we’ll be reaching out to state and local leaders.

Keep checking the blog because I’ll be updating it with more news direct from the conference.

Facebook’s Dan Levy to Discuss ‘Nearby’ at LSA Annual Conference

Tuesday, January 29, 2013

We are looking forward to hearing from another great keynote speaker at our annual conference: Dan Levy, Director, Small Business, of Facebook.

Dan will be discussing Facebook’s “Nearby” feature that has captured a lot of press recently for its impact on local search.  He will share insight into some of the recent updates to Nearby as well as plans for future updates such as the addition of information from third-party services.

Facebook’s Nearby combines the social elements of Facebook with its geo-location services by allowing users to find local spots that friends have checked into or “liked” such as restaurants or other local stores and businesses.  In addition to social information, users are provided with addresses, contact info and hours of operation for these local businesses.  Facebook also goes a step further by tapping into the hugely successful online reviews space with features that allow users to rate and review local businesses and recommend them to friends.

Dan leads the Small Business team at Facebook. He is responsible for sales, marketing, and service for the millions of small businesses who use Facebook to connect with their customers and grow their businesses. Dan joined Facebook in 2008 to start the Payments and Risk organization leading Facebook’s efforts to expand payment acceptance, industry relationships, and operations. Prior to Facebook, Dan started his own marketing business – Justarrive, and spent seven years at PayPal.

Dan will be speaking on Day 2 of “Search Starts Here” to close the conference via a fireside chat format.  Get your questions ready!

Visit our conference website for more information and make sure to register for our conference by February 13th to receive $200 OFF the full registration price!

‘Save Page’ Enhancement and Refined Search Results Screen on DOL

Monday, January 28, 2013

As previously announced, we will be introducing numerous enhancements to the Directories Online (DOL) application during the 1st Quarter of 2013.  Over the weekend we added two enhancements that improve DOL’s efficiency and usability.

We added a new “Save Page” icon on the Page View screen.  The “Save Page” icon makes it easier to perform a quick save to the workstation without needing to move the page to the Cart first.

We’ve also refined the Search Results screen giving it a cleaner appearance, more information and improved efficiency.  The column header is now a static display and the individual heading selection checkboxes were eliminated.  In addition, directories that were selected in the initial search that returned no results will now appear at the end of the list with the phrase “No Match to Search Criteria.”

More useful enhancements to come!

If you have any feedback or suggestions for future enhancements, please contact Kevin Kalinowski at (248) 244-0713 or via e-mail at kevin.kalinowski@localsearchassociation.org.  If Kevin is not available, please contact Ed Halasz at (248) 244-6201 or via e-mail at ed.halasz@localsearchassociation.org.

Ninth Circuit Denies City of Seattle’s Request to Stay its Mandate Overturning Yellow Pages Ordinance

Friday, January 25, 2013

In another favorable decision yesterday, the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously denied the City of Seattle’s request to stay – or delay – the Court’s mandate overturning the city’s phone book law while it seeks U.S. Supreme Court review. The mandate, which will be issued in the next few days, is the formal order from the Court that renders Seattle’s directory delivery ordinance void.

The City has until April 1 to seek review by the Supreme Court.  The Supreme Court only grants approximately 1% of the appeal requests it receives.

We are pleased with the Court’s decision, which further supports its early ruling that print directories are fully protected speech under the First Amendment. This decision protects media from restrictions that hurt local businesses and consumers and unnecessarily cost taxpayer dollars.

Our national consumer choice program, rather than government mandates, is the best approach to ensure consumers can control the delivery of Yellow Pages directories to their homes. We believe it doesn’t make sense to deliver a directory to someone who doesn’t want one. Our national opt-out website at www.YellowPagesOptOut.com has been available since 2011 at no cost to taxpayers and without the use of government resources.

More SMBs Look to Social and Mobile for 2013

Thursday, January 24, 2013

Local market research group, Borrell Associates, released a new report on SMB advertising plans for 2013, in it they predict local digital advertising spend in the US will reach $24.5 billion this year.

The report, ‘2013 Local Advertising Outlook: Get Ready for the Rebound’, shows that local digital ad spend is on track to increase 31% over last year with most of the focus going toward targeted display ads and paid search.

Social and mobile will be a big part of the local advertising mix in 2013 as well. According to the survey, Facebook is the number 1 online platform SMBs plan to place ads this year with nearly 3 out of 10 reporting those plans. Additionally, 75% of SMBs surveyed reported familiarity with mobile platforms in 2012 whereas only 40% were familiar in 2011.

Those surveyed were interested in exploring mobile coupons, text messages, and mobile optimized sites among other tactics. Interestingly, four out of ten of those surveyed said they’d never been pitched by a mobile firm, showing an opportunity for agencies in that space.

Strategic Exchange Sessions Bring Concentrated Access to Local Search Professionals & Free Conference Registration

Wednesday, January 23, 2013

“The SES sessions guaranteed us a date to the dance by providing the opportunity for meaningful dialogue with decision-makers.”

-Tammy Osborne, The Andersen Group

During our annual conference, “Search Starts Here,” April 13-16, 2013 at the Planet Hollywood Casino and Resort in Las Vegas, there will be plenty of opportunities for local search professionals to network, exchange ideas and discuss the industry’s leading issues. In order to allow for more private discussions to take place, we are once again hosting our Strategic Exchange Sessions (SES).  SES’s are a very popular component of our conference – in fact, last year they sold out!

SES’s are held at tables, private cabana tents and executive suites at the hotel and are a great way to get concentrated access to other attendees and companies while at the conference.  Once an organization reserves an SES, they are periodically sent an updated list of attendees with contact information. We recommend that companies participating in the SES program schedule appointments prior to the conference in order to make the most of their time.

We are also offering one FREE conference registration for every company that registers for their SES before Thursday, January 31, 2013.  Reserve today and take advantage of this opportunity to network with some of the biggest players in traditional and digital local advertising. And for the first time, at registration SES participants will be offered the opportunity to take advantage of complimentary webinars to communicate with attendees in advance of the conference.

For more information, visit the Strategic Exchange Session page on our conference website.

Facebook Announces Launch of ‘Graph Search’

Tuesday, January 22, 2013

Facebook

Rumors swirled, last week, around a mysterious press conference called by Facebook featuring the social network’s famous founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg. It turned out the big announcement at Facebook’s Menlo Park headquarters had been a year in the making: Facebook will be rolling out a new tool for users called “Graph Search.”

With more than one billion users worldwide, Facebook has an immense vault of data from years of users status updates, likes, check-ins and links. Graph Search will help users harness all of that information to more easily find what they’re looking for. Unlike the results of searches conducted through traditional search engines, Graph Search will enable Facebook users to search their social network for people, places, photos and things that interest them. For example, a user could find a new pizzeria in their town that their friends have liked and checked into. They could also use the tool to find a new dentist, or even a new job, according to Facebook executives.

Graph Search would not only help users find local businesses and services, but likeminded people. Currently, Facebook users can just search for others by name, but with this new feature users will be able to search for people who like jogging, or friends who like a certain band.

The new rollout is currently in beta and available to just a few thousand Facebook members. If successful, it could be a major player in the search space given the social network’s extensive presence.

Let us know what you think. Does Graph Search have the potential to be a competitor to sites like Google and Bing? Might it eventually crack the markets of dating and interest sites like OkCupid and MeetUp, or local search sites like Yelp?

We’ll certainly be watching.

Suzanne Franks: ‘Need Satisfaction Selling’ – A Sales Methodology of the Eighties

Friday, January 18, 2013

Today’s guest blogger, Suzanne Franks of  Axiom Sales Force Development,  has over 20 years of sales and marketing experience in local media. She began her career at Young & Rubicam in New York City as a media planner and buyer. She joined Verizon, which became Super Media, and began her service helping small & medium sized businesses grow via print, online, mobile and social media solutions. Throughout her career she has held various sales, sales management, sales force development, compensation planning, marketing and executive positions.

Axiom

I am a “professional of the eighties”. That’s when I entered the sales force and began my long and rewarding career in local media sales. I attended 6 weeks of sales training before being released to the field. While we learned the features and benefits of our product, and how to submit an order accurately, the majority of the time was spent learning and practicing needs based selling in context to the product we were selling, yellow pages. We were taught to discover our client’s needs, craft solutions that would meet those needs and prepare a presentation so the client could understand our value proposition. And all local media, radio, television, newspapers where taught to do the same. It worked great!  Our clients businesses grew I was making a terrific living, and our company was succeeding.

Well now it is 2013, and the needs satisfaction selling methodology of the eighties no longer produces the results it once did, for any industry. Why? Because as we have all experienced in our professional and personal lives the world has changed dramatically and forever.

Competition has notably increased. Both the numbers of local media providers and media choices have increased tenfold, and the trend is predicted to continue.

Additionally, many of the providers are selling similar, if not the same digital media products. And this proliferation of providers, choices and commoditization is not unique to the media industry.

So when most providers can meet the needs of the client, how does a client know which is BEST at helping them accomplish their goals.  This is the help clients are looking for. This is the catalyst for installing a new sales methodology that keeps pace with how clients want to buy. If sales professionals cannot provide this help, the client’s decision quickly defaults to price since no clear differentiation among the solutions is evident.

In order to maximize today’s buying environment the needs based selling methodology must evolve from simply meeting their needs, to helping clients establish decision criteria to determine which SOLUTION is BEST in terms of product, support and the company that will provide it. This will help them differentiate amongst what appears to be like options. It must evolve from needs based selling to differentiated decision advising or consulting.

We owe it to our clients to help them establish these criteria if we expect to build a trusting relationship with them. When we make the commitment to transition from needs based selling to differentiated decision advising we truly earn the title of advisor or consultant that so many sales organizations have merely bestowed upon themselves.

Sales organizations that have evolved to differentiated decision advising enjoy increased revenue, margins, customer satisfaction and loyalty and decreased sales turnover.

Don’t you owe it to your clients, sales force and shareholders to bring your sales methodology into the 2010’s? I would love to hear your comments or feedback. Please email me at AXIOM Sales Force Development.  And if you’d like we will be happy to share, at no charge, the key questions we use that will help your clients develop meaningful decision criteria. My email address is sfranks@AXIOMsfd.com.

PagesJaunes Groupe President and CEO Jean-Pierre Remy to Delivery Keynote at LSA Annual Conference

Wednesday, January 16, 2013

We are really fortunate to have secured a phenomenal keynote speaker for our 2013 annual conference, “Search Starts Here”: Jean-Pierre Remy, President and Chief Executive Officer of PagesJaunes.

PagesJaunes is the Yellow Pages publisher in France. Since taking on his role in 2009, Jean-Pierre has led the remarkable transformation of the company from a traditional print publisher into one of the world’s most progressive local search companies.

Recently, MIT’s prestigious Sloan Business School, in association with CapGemini Consulting, conducted a study into digital transformation within large traditional billion-dollar-plus organizations. The purpose was to identify companies from traditional business sectors who had successfully embraced digital technology in order to radically transform their performance. Jean-Pierre’s ability to successfully capitalize on new digital opportunities for PagesJaunes within the directive media-publishing was specifically cited in the report as a model example for the industry.

Today, PagesJaunes reaches 90% of French consumers through its portfolio of print, digital, mobile and social products and ranks as one of the top 10 global companies in terms of online revenues, with 59% of its approximately $1.5 billion annual revenue coming from its digital offerings. In my opinion, PagesJaunes represents one of the greatest transformation stories from traditional to digital media ever.

PagesJaunes’ successful realignment serves as a model for all traditional media companies looking to evolve into forward-looking digital media players.  I encourage anyone who is looking to make a similar transition to the digital world to join us in learning how Jean-Pierre led the transformation of his company.

Visit our conference website for more information and to register for “Search Starts Here,” April 13-16, 2013 at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. We’ll be posting additional details throughout this week on the exciting things we have planned for this year’s gathering.
